Details

Finely polished horse-eye bean (Mucuna sloanei) 25mm in diameter

The seeds of Mucuna sloanei are not all perfectly identical, the one you receive may be slightly different than those shown in the photo, but it will be of the same species and processed with the same care.

These have a characteristic three-layered appearance, appearing like the eyes of a large mammal in some species and like a hamburger in others (most notably M. sloanei) and giving rise to common names like deer-eye beans, donkey-eye beans, ox-eye beans, or hamburger seed.

Traditionally kept in houses, in the pocket or as a necklace to ward off the evil eye, it is considered a protection or a lucky charm in tropical America and as far north as northern Europe when they wash up on a beach after a long trip.
