There are a hundred species of Mucuna and about fifty specie of Dioclea, all producing marble-like seeds particularly hard. English common names include bull’s eye seed, hamburger bean or sea purse depending on the variety.

Traditionally kept in homes, in the pocket or as a necklace to ward off the evil eye, it is considered a real lucky charm in many parts of the world: the West Indies, South America and even northern Europe when they fail on a beach after a long trip.
